The role of mentors is to provide support and encouragement to youth on a weekly basis in the form of a caring adult who is not a family member.
Studies show that mentorship:
- Helps young people manage life challenges, including relationships with peers and parents
- Facilitates meaningful conversations that boost cognitive skills and provide diverse perspectives
- Strengthens self-regulation, one’s ability to manage emotions and impulses — to think before acting
- Promotes the development of Emotional Intelligence (EQ) skills by modeling empathy, curiosity, resourcefulness, and resilience
- Opens doors to new ways of thinking, resources, and opportunities, and fosters self-efficacy – a belief in oneself
